In March 2024, China's urea exports plummeted to 420 tons, a sharp 96.48% year-on-year decline and a 44.07% drop from the previous month, with cumulative Q1 exports totaling just 2,570 tons—down 95.13% from the same period last year. Meanwhile, urea imports surged to 375.23 tons in March, soaring 4,232.96% year-on-year and 1,672.65% month-on-month, pushing first-quarter imports to 3,676.52 tons, an 80.59% increase. The average export price stood at $278.92 per ton, while the import price reached $1,096.07 per ton, highlighting a widening cost gap. China’s urea exports were primarily directed to Hong Kong (58%), South Korea (41%), and the UAE (1%). This dramatic shift reflects a major transformation in China’s urea trade dynamics, moving toward increased reliance on imports amid sharply reduced overseas shipments.
